Vaccination Chart Govt Hospital Tamilnadu
If you are a parent, chances are your child’s vaccines are being administered at a Government Hospital or Primary Health Centre. Choosing the government healthcare system is a reliable and common path for many families in the state. However, what often creates confusion is not the medical procedure itself, but the uncertainty surrounding the specific timing of each dose. Consequently, staying informed about the official schedule is essential for every guardian.
Government hospitals in Tamil Nadu follow the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). These vaccines are provided free of cost and are meant to protect children from serious and potentially life-threatening infections. The schedule begins at birth and continues through infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

Vaccines given at birth
- Soon after birth, babies receive vaccines that protect against tuberculosis, polio, and hepatitis B. These are essential early vaccines because a newborn’s immune system is still developing and needs protection right from the start.
Vaccines in the first few months
From around six weeks of age, babies begin receiving vaccines at regular intervals. Your baby will get protection against multiple diseases including diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, severe pneumonia, polio, and rotavirus diarrhoea.
Parents often feel anxious seeing multiple injections, but this schedule is designed specifically to protect infants during their most vulnerable period.
Vaccines after 9 months
As the child grows, vaccines continue to protect against measles and rubella. In certain districts of Tamil Nadu, vaccines against Japanese encephalitis are also given. Booster doses are administered to strengthen earlier immunity, and vitamin A supplementation supports vision and overall health. This phase is commonly missed due to travel, school admission delays, or lack of reminders.
Vaccines during school age and teenage years
Vaccination does not end after early childhood. Government hospitals provide booster vaccines during school age and again in adolescence to ensure long-term protection. Many parents assume vaccines are no longer needed once the child appears healthy, but immunity needs reinforcement over time.
-
Some vaccines are not part of the government programme and are available only in private hospitals. These are called optional vaccines. They offer added protection depending on lifestyle, school exposure, or health conditions.

Quick FAQs on optional vaccines
Can I give the MMR vaccine at a private clinic instead of the Government MR vaccine?
Yes. While the Government provides the MR (Measles, Rubella) vaccine, private clinics often offer MMR, which adds protection against Mumps.
Why are vaccines like Typhoid or Chickenpox not on the Government chart?
The Government chart focuses on "essential" vaccines that prevent the most life-threatening or disabling diseases in the general population. Optional vaccines like Chickenpox, Typhoid, and Hepatitis A are recommended by pediatricians but must be taken at private clinics as they are not currently part of the free National Immunization Schedule.
Is it safe to mix Government and Private vaccines?
Yes, it is common. You can receive primary vaccines (like BCG, Polio, and Pentavalent) for free at a Government Hospital and visit a private doctor for additional boosters or "painless" (acellular) vaccine versions not available in the public sector.
