Febrile Seizure Guidelines for Parents
A febrile seizure is a fit triggered by fever, most often in children between 6 months and 5 years. They can be frightening, but most are harmless if handled properly.
What to do during a febrile seizure:
Stay calm.
Lay your child on their side on a flat, safe surface.
Loosen tight clothing.
Keep time – most seizures last under 5 minutes.
Move nearby objects to prevent injury.
What NOT to do:
❌ Do not put anything in your child’s mouth.
❌ Do not give food, water, or medicine during the seizure.
❌ Do not try to restrain the child’s movements.
Seek urgent medical help if:
The seizure lasts more than 5 minutes.
Your child has trouble breathing or doesn’t wake up.
Seizures happen again in the same illness.
Your child is under 6 months old.
